Suleymaniye Mosque, located in Istanbul in Turkey, is a magnificent example of Ottoman architecture. Built during the 16th century by the order of Sultan Suleyman the Magnificent, it stands on one of the seven hills of Istanbul and overlooks the Golden Horn and Sea of Marmara.
It comprises four minarets, one main dome, several smaller domes, and multiple balconies with ornate balustrades. Its interior features an impressive array of stunning tilework and decorative Korans written in calligraphy.
The mosque also houses two tombs - that of Suleyman the Magnificent and his wife Hurrem Sultan - as well as a library containing numerous manuscripts.
The structure’s prominent exterior columns are made from marble shipped from Isparta to Istanbul by boat. These columns support a series of graceful arches which lead into an elegant courtyard flanked by cypress trees and fountains.
As guests pass through this courtyard they can marvel at the grandiose building framed against the Bosporus strait and its serene skyline before entering the main dome chamber for prayer. Inside, lighter-toned stones have been used to create an intricate geometric pattern surrounding a central octagonal plan that helps to give an impression of grand scale while maintaining its airy atmosphere.
The Suleymaniye Mosque was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985 due to its unique beauty and historical importance. It is visited by millions every year who come to admire its aesthetic charm, spiritual significance, and place in Turkish history as one of Istanbul's most iconic sites.
