Rumeli Fortress Istanbul is an incredible fortification built by the Ottoman Empire in the 15th century, located at the narrowest point of the Bosphorus Strait, which connects Europe and Asia.
This fortress is a unique achievement of its kind and was constructed over a period of just four months to help defend Constantinople (Istanbul). The size of this fortress is truly amazing and it covers an area of 130,000 square meters.
It stands 35 meters high on two hills, with 14 towers that are connected by walls ranging from 2 to 5 meters thick. In addition to its defensive value, Rumeli Fortress was also used as a detention center for political prisoners during Ottoman rule.
The design of Rumeli Fortress pays tribute to ingenious military engineering, as it featured walls protecting each side of the structure and multiple complexly shaped bastions that served as watchtowers.
Inside these bastions were secret tunnels that could be used for quick escape or attack routes. Additionally, many interior spaces were designed with a maze-like quality making it almost impossible for intruders to get around without being detected. Despite being centuries old, the fortress remains incredibly intact due to its robust design and construction process featuring bricks made from volcanic rocks and limestone mortar which strengthen the entire structure against wear and tear caused by climatic conditions such as rain or snowfall.
Today Rumeli Fortress Istanbul is no longer used to defend against enemy forces but remains open as a tourist attraction full of history and culture. Visitors can explore turrets and towers across the grounds, take part in interactive activities such as archery demonstrations or sword fighting classes for kids and adults alike - all while admiring breathtaking views across both continents from one vantage point - an experience not easily forgotten!
